Upcoming Telstar race

Next Saturday, January 4 (before we return to school), the Telstar Relays will be happening in Bethel.  The Telstar Relays are always fun, with mixed (boys and girls) skate relay teams and a few individuals if we don't divide up evenly, along with the crazy tights raffle at the end. The van will be leaving Desert Rd at 8:30 and returning around 4:00-5:00. Since this is not a WMC race, Telstar is an optional race for our skiers, however we do hope many will attend.  In order to have accurate race registration and plan relay teams, as well as ensure transportation, every team member needs to drop Susan an email (highschool@mainecoastwaldorf.org) by Wednesday (January 1) morning, letting her know one way or the other whether they plan on racing on Saturday and, if they will be racing, if they will be riding the van or have their own transportation.

Ski Camp - Delayed Start By One Hour

Due to extremely icy conditions in some areas this morning, we want to give the roads an extra hour to warm up and the ice to melt, so will now depart at 11:00 instead of 10:00.

We are asking that one person from each family (either skier or parent) shoot Susan an email (highschool@mainecoastwaldorf.org), letting me know you are all set to head out at 11:00 instead of 10:00. If Susan doesn't hear from you by 9:00, she will be making phone calls.

Ski Camp - December 2019

~ Updated Monday, December 23 ~

Due to an unfortunate lack of snow, ski camp is relocating to the Mount Washington Valley area of New Hampshire. The info below has been updated with new-New Hampshire details, so make sure to read everything carefully (especially the updated packing list).

SKI CAMP INFO …
Probably the most important thing to convey is that everyone should be sure to have the right gear for ski camp. Having the right clothes (layers are super important) will make for a much more pleasant experience for the week. If anyone thinks they are missing some critical piece of gear, do reach out to John ahead of time and he will help in getting/loaning you what you need.

Bring skis to school

Everyone should bring ski gear to school this week, in case we get enough snow in this next storm to make our way over to the golf course.

Wednesday, December 11, 2019

Practice info

Practice info for the remainder of this week can be found on the Practice Info tab.

Practice this week

Since the amount of rain and warm temps isn't an exact science, everyone should bring skate skis and running gear tomorrow (Monday) so we'll be ready for anything. Once we know if skiing is possible, exact practice plans will be posted here and at school outside Susan's office.

Sunday, December 1, 2019

Practice

Practice starts tomorrow - Monday, December 2! Everyone interested in being on the ski team is expected to attend all practices unless there is a specific reason on a particular day when you have a conflict (doctor appointment, injured, etc.). If there is ever a day you need to miss, you should tell John (coach) ahead of time and also let Susan know.

Welcome and Info

Welcome to the 2019-2020 Nordic season! Practices will start up the week after Thanksgiving and very soon we will be posting practice plans on a weekly basis, along with lots of other helpful info and details. A few things to note for now ...

Ski Camp:We are still pulling things together, but are thinking that we will have ski camp during the December vacation, possibly beginning on Friday, December 27 and lasting probably 3 days/2 nights. though depending on group interest, it could be 4 days/3 nights. It will not begin any earlier than the 27th, but could get pushed a day or two later. Finally, and VERY IMPORTANTLY, we will need a parent (or two) to "host" camp, going with the team, handling food, etc., so parents, please consider if this could be you. It is really fun to spend time with a great group of kids and ski camp can't happen without a parent helper, so please let Susan know if you can help out.

Upcoming Ski Swaps:
Anyone needing new equipment should consider one (or more) of the upcoming ski swaps. In the next few weeks, ski swaps can be found at:
Camden Hills Ski Sale - Saturday, November 23
2019 Yarmouth Ski Swap - Saturday, November 23
2019 Falmouth Ski Swap - Sunday, November 24

L.L.Bean Nordic Team Info Night:
Please save the date for our annual L.L.Bean Nordic Team Night. Details are outlined in the flyer below. Factory reps are coming back to offer one time special pricing, and we will have clinics for coaches and parents as well. L.L.Bean Nordic Ski Team Discount Cards will be distributed to all eligible athletes at this event. Special guest Kris Freeman will join us this year! Athletes should have a signed waiver or a coach available to sign in order to participate in the dryland training. Ask Susan for participant agreement forms.

Great news! No waiting for orders to arrive this year! We have already received gear to sell on sight at this event. We are hoping that a majority of the kids will be able to purchase and walk away with their ski sets the same day.

UPDATE - Monday, March 4 Appreciation Evening

~ Updated Monday, March 4 ~

Due to today's snow day, we are rescheduling the end of season appreciation evening to NEXT Monday, March 11.

Enjoy the snow today!!!

We may end up with snow on Monday.  If we do and it's significant, we may postpone our final team gathering until the following Monday, March 11.  Stay tuned for what the weather brings and, if necessary, a decision.

What's next ...

~ Updated Sunday, February 24 ~

Here's what there is to know about the nordic team for the next week or so.

End of Season Gathering:
Our End of Season Appreciation evening will be Monday, March 4 at 7:00 in the Downeast Room at the high school.  This is a time for the team to look back on the season, say many thank-yous, and enjoy dessert.  We hope all skiers will attend, and parents and interested siblings are most welcome as well.

We will need some help to make this happen.  Please let Susan know if you can do any of the following:
  • Six people will be needed to bring a tasty treat to share - cookies, brownies, bars, etc.
  • One or two people to arrive around 6:30 to help set-up.
Photos:
The captains will be putting together a slideshow for next Monday's gathering, so please send Nash any photos or links to galleries so they have pictures to work with.  Nash can be found at  nholley2019@mainecoastwaldorf.org.  These can be anything related to the ski team this season - skiers, coaches, waxing, racing, riding in the van, hanging out together, pasta party, etc.  Please send these ASAP, as the captains will be working on this Tuesday after school.

Optional Races:
With states behind us, the regular high school race season is now complete.  Coming up next weekend (Saturday, March 2) is the U16/Eastern High School Qualifier, which is scheduled to take place at Black Mountain in Rumford.  For those that don't know what this is, the qualifier is a "two race in one day format" (classic in the morning, skate pursuit in the afternoon) to determine who is eligible to represent Maine in both the U16 festival and the Eastern High School festival later in March.  Each of these festivals is a 3 day/2 night event of skiing and racing.  U16s are for younger skiers (born in 2003 or 2004) and EHSs are for all high school skiers.  Each state in New England (and nearby) will field a similar team of 24 skiers and they all race against each other on the festival weekends.  Note that if you make either of these teams and choose to attend the festival weekend, there is a not insignificant fee to be paid by the skier/family (probably ~ $300 plus NENSA membership).  Click here for a post on mainehighschoolskiing.com re: the qualifier.

Anyone is welcome to participate in the qualifier.  In addition to the link posted just above, interested skiers should keep an eye on www.mainehighschoolskiing.com for any new info and updates that may be added.  Do note that this is not an MCWS team event, so the race registration fee ($20 early or $23 day of) is not covered by your MCWS team fee.  All skiers participating in the qualifier will need to submit their own registration (online registration form found on the qualifier info page on mainehighschoolskiing.com).

John Tarling has graciously agreed to wax for our skiers participating in the qualifier, so please extend an extra thank you to John for his help.  Anyone wanting John to wax for them MUST contact him by Monday night (February 25).  Good luck to all that elect to ski in this race!  Remember that if you make one (or both) of these teams and intend on participating in the festival weekend(s), you must have a check in hand and be prepared to pay for the festival weekend(s) on March 2, the qualifier day.

For those that do make either the U16 or Maine EHS team - those festival weekends are:
U16 - March 8-10 at Bethel Village Trails, Bethel, ME
EHS - March 15-17 at Fort Kent Outdoor Center, Fort Kent, ME

Scholarship:
There are some scholarship funds available for attending these festival weekends.  Information is shown on the Qualifier info page on mainehighschoolskiing.com, along with a download of the application form.  Note that they are asking for the completed scholarship application form to be returned by February 25, which is this Monday.

Practices:
Since the regular high school season is over, there will not be any more official after school practices.  As long as Pineland is open, skiers are welcome to arrange their own transportation and ski on their own (passes are still good).

Uniforms:
Everyone should return their CLEAN uniform to Susan this week.  Kids skiing in the qualifier next weekend may keep their uniforms until after that race.

What's next?
We are checking the calendar to finalize the date for our end of season appreciation evening and will post it here shortly.

For those that wish to continue their season, there is a qualifier race and the upcoming U16 and Eastern High School festival weekends.  We will post detailed info on these events soon.

Who Skis in States?
We are only permitted 8 boy skiers and 8 girls skiers in the States races.  Like all teams in the state, that means not every skier on our team will get to race. That said, every MCWS skier is a valued team member and is eligible to be pressed into service should any of the original 8 become ill or injured.  We therefore hope and expect that everyone on the team will attend States.

Important Policy:
The states races are run in a pursuit format, just like WMCs last week. Because this is a pursuit style race, a skier must ski (and finish) both days in order to count for the team score.  This means that every skier should do everything in their power to ski in and finish the classic race. Even if you have an equipment problem or feel lousy, still finish the race!

Wax Info:
Everyone should plan on glide waxing their CLASSIC skis (glide zone only) and SKATE skis prior to the States races.  If you don't have the ability to wax your skis at home, John is available to meet up over the weekend at Pineland to help out.  Kick zones on your classic skis should be clean and ready for kick wax.  Everyone should clean their skis themselves and be sure it's done prior to Monday.

No klister binder application needs to happen 8:00-9:00am Monday morning.  John will do all kick waxing at Titcomb once we arrive.

See the Wax Info tab for glide wax recommendation.

Here's the plan for Friday, February 8 practice ...

Practice will take place right at the school from 3:00 to 5:00.  It will be a combination of skiing and waxing to ensure everyone has waxed skis for Saturday's race.

If you need help waxing, bring your race CLASSIC skis to practice tomorrow.  BE SURE YOU HAVE CLEANED THE KICK ZONE.

Skiers waxing their own skis at home should check the Wax Info tab.

After practice, everyone will head to the Holley's for a pasta party - see the post about this farther down this screen.

    Pasta Party Friday night

First off, read the important post just below this one about Wednesday's race. Lots of things have changed re: this race, so be sure to read so you'll know what's what.

Now, on to what's next ...

This coming Saturday is Part 2 of the Western Maine Conference (WMC) championship races, the perfect time to have a little fun the night before! The Holleys have offered to have a ski team pasta party this Friday evening right after practice, approximately 5:00-7:00. They will provide the pasta and are hoping that people will bring drinks, desserts, and maybe some snacks. Please contact Nash via email (Nashholley@gmail.com) or in person at school to discuss what you can bring. Rides will be provided to the Holley's house and parents should pick up at the Holley's house - 5 Brookhill Rd in Freeport, just off of Webster Rd and about a minute from school. Hope to see everyone there!

    Wednesday race

    ~ Updated 7:30pm on Tuesday, February 5 ~

Regrettably, due to the extremely warm weather yesterday and today, tomorrow's race has had to be moved to Fryeburg, with new start times of 3:00 boys and 4:00 girls.  This will be an individual start at :15 intervals.

We need to leave by 12:30 tomorrow - truly all packed up, everyone and their gear loaded in the vans, and driving away from school no later than 12:30.  Skiers that don't have any wax setup at home (and this is only a few of you) may leave class tomorrow at 11:30 and do some waxing outside on the school patio.  Everyone else should stay in class until 12:00 and then have from 12:00 to 12:25 to change, pack the vans and eat lunch.  Skiers - please don't wait to be asked to load your skis into the vans.  As soon as you are changed, head outside and put your skis in the ski box.

By now, everyone should know that the race has been changed to SKATE, not classic.  The classic portion of the WMC championship races will now take place this Saturday, also at Fryeburg.

A wax recommendation has been posted on the Wax Info tab.  If you are at all able to wax at home tonight, please do so.  We will only be able to wax a very few skis tomorrow before the race.

As a guess, our guess for return time for the vans to Desert Rd is 7:00-7:30.  Skiers can call from the vans when we are an hour away.

    Thursday, January 31, 2019

    Friday's race at Fryeburg

We will be leaving by 12:00 for the race in Fryeburg, so skiers need to be dressed and ready to go by that time.  You can either change at break time or you are welcome to wear your ski gear to school.

Remember that Fryeburg doesn't have any indoor facilities, so dress and supply yourself accordingly.  It is expected to be a chilly day.

    What to Bring:
    • CLASSIC skis, boots and poles
    • Race suit
    • Warm clothes for before and after your race - think layers!
    • Warm hat/mittens/etc.
    • Food for before and after your race
    • Water bottle
Our best guess at return time is 6:30, however that is not necessarily accurate.  Skiers can call their rides once we are on the road back with a more accurate return time.

    Tuesday, January 29, 2019

    Thursday practice plans

To prepare for Friday's race, at Thursday's practice EVERYONE will be doing race ski prep.  Practice will be a combination of skiing and waxing, so everyone should do the following:
    • Make sure your classic race skis are CLEAN and ready for kick wax
    • If you need to glide wax (those that raced last weekend are probably ok), use blue wax in the glide zone only
The vans will return to Desert Rd around 5:30.

    Monday, January 28, 2019

This week's WMC race has been moved to Friday

Due to incoming weather, there will NOT be a race this week on Wednesday, January 30.  Instead it will happen on Friday, February 1.  It will be a classic race at Fryeburg.  Skiers will leave school by 12:00 on Friday and return to campus after both races, probably by 6:30.

MLK Day race rescheduled for Wednesday and other news of the week

    ~ Update Sunday, January 20 ~

Parents - We need YOU on Wednesday!  We can't pull off a race with just three volunteers, which is what we have thus far.  None of the jobs are hard, you just have to be there.  You will need to arrive and be out at the start area by 3:15, when you should check in with Susan.  However right now you should send Susan an email, letting her know you will be there Wednesday, ready to pitch in.  If we get lots of helpers, then perhaps you can just watch and cheer, which is a great thing too.  Thanks in advance for stepping up to help your skier's team.

Skiers - Please twist your parents' arms to help at Wednesday's race.  We need them.

Skiers - We also need to know by Tuesday at 12:00 if you plan on racing in next Saturday's (January 26) classic race at Black Mt in Rumford.  Be prepared to tell Susan when you come to school on Tuesday whether or not you will be skiing in this race.

    -------------------------------------------

Due to the expected Sunday snow storm, transportation and travel could prove challenging for many of the visiting schools.  After consulting with Pineland, athletic directors and checking the weather, the decision has been made to NOT hold the race on Monday, January 21 (MLK Day) and reschedule it for Wednesday, January 23 at 3:30.

We are still hosting this race and will need at least 12 parents to help as start lane wranglers, bib collectors, course marshalls, etc.  This is our one hosting responsibility of the year, so we need you!  Please contact Susan at highschool@mainecoastwaldorf.org to let her know you can be at this race and will help out.

Thanks for your flexibility in scheduling and your help at the race.

    Wednesday race at Riverside

Wednesday's race at Riverside is a go!  The particulars are:

Interval start skate race. The course isn't perfect, but OK enough considering the conditions.

Departure: Skiers should be changed, gear collected and ready to go by 2:00. Plan on changing at lunchtime.

Transportation: Two school vans will depart Desert Rd at 2:00pm and return to Desert Rd following the girls race, we're thinking between 5:00 and 5:30.  Skiers can call from the road once they're underway to let parents know when they will be back at school.

The Course: Two lap course +/- 5k in length, set wide enough in most areas to allow for passing. The loop is mostly flat, winding back and forth along the fairways. There is one decent climb and downhill with a good run out that will be skied twice. There are two short two-way sections that will be marked and marshaled. The course will be skied counter-clockwise so the hill is in the first 1K of the loop, which provides for a safer decent.

The Conditions: Be aware that there are patches of ice here and there, and a few tufts of turf, but overall pretty good. You can double pole over the icy patches and should be fine.

The Plan: 3:30 interval start for boys, girls to follow.

Location and Parking: The race loop is on the "north" (18-hole) golf course with the start/finish area close to the location that has been used for Middle School races. There is a ample parking for cars and buses in the club-house/Riverside Grill parking lot. 1158 Riverside St, Portland, ME 04103

Make sure not to go to the "south" (9-hole) practice course down the road. Be aware that some navigation apps have been sending people there erroneously.

Other: Skiers may use the bathrooms in the lower floor of the Riverside Grill. There is a water fountain in the foyer as well.

    Important dates and response required

We have a few weekend races coming up quite soon:

Next Saturday, January 19 - Maranacook Waves (skate) - This is a really fun race and great to ski on a different course.  Skiers set out in waves based on grade and it's always a good time.

Monday, January 21 (MLK Day) - We host all WMC teams for a fun, different format race.  We're not sure yet what that will be, but could be skiathlon, relay, obstacle course, etc.  This is a mandatory race and all our skiers are expected in attendance, along with a number of parent helpers.  More info will follow this week.  Again, note that ALL our skiers should be at this race.

Saturday, January 26 - Sassi at Black Mountain (classic) - One of the biggest races in the state with skiers from Kort Kent, York, and everywhere in between, and is one of the most well run races as well.  You haven't truly made your mark in high school skiing if you haven't yet skied in the Sassi race!

Maranacook Waves and the Sassi are optional races for our skiers.  Susan needs to hear from everyone what their plans are for these races.  Let her know by THIS TUESDAY, January 15 about the Maranacook Waves and by the following Tuesday, January 22, about the Sassi.  If you are going to either of these races, also let Susan know if you want a ride on the school van or if you will be providing your own transportation.

Wax clinic on Tuesday after practice

John will be holding a wax clinic on Tuesday, 5:00-6:00pm at the high school.  This is intended to help with the basics for any skiers unfamiliar with how to wax their skis and a refresher for those that already know how to wax.  New waxers should definitely attend and the help of some experienced waxers would be much appreciated.

Anyone planning to attend should let Susan know by 9:00 on Tuesday, so we can let John know who/how many to expect.

UPDATED - Practice plans for today

Late breaking news - Pineland has opened, so the team will be heading to Pineland today.  Vans will return to Desert Rd around 5:00.
