States-Presque Isle Info

Updated Saturday, 2/14.  Prior to leaving on today, please reread the What to Bring and the Electronics note.

Be sure to read posts below this one, as there has been much information posted lately.

Now, on to business - Here’s everything to know about the upcoming trip to Presque Isle for States.  If you still have questions after reading this, contact Susan.

Races:
Monday, February 16 - Classic Race
Boys Start - 2:30 PM
Girls Start - 4:00 PM

Tuesday, February 17 - Skate Race
Boys Start - 2:30 PM
Girls Start - 4:00 PM
Awards to follow

Transportation:
We are taking two vans and one car to Presque Isle and are expecting that all skiers will ride with the team.  If anyone is getting their own ride, you must let Susan know by Friday.

Leaving – Arrive at Desert Rd by 1:30 on Saturday, February 14.

Returning – Awards will happen late in the day on Tuesday, so we will be spending Tuesday night in Presque Isle.  On Wednesday morning we need to pack up, clean up, eat, pack the vans, etc., so an exact departure time is difficult to pinpoint.  If we leave at 10:00ish, we should be back to Desert Rd around 3:00.  Kids can call home from the road when we know our arrival time more exactly.

Chaperones:
John Tarling, Jason Donahue, Lucy Birkett, Jim Ahearne and Susan Sonntag

Food:
Food is being handled the same way it was for Christmas Camp and is being organized by Lucy, who you will hear from via email. While chaperones will do the bulk of the cooking, it would be great if 4-5 families would send along NUT-FREE cookies or bars for desserts, or if anyone wants to make a whole meal to send up, that would be great too! (details will be in the email).  If you are sending any food for the group, be sure to let Lucy know.

Athletes should also bring their own stash of bars, etc. to eat when they wantSome of the kids eat quite a bit more than others, so kids who need extra food might consider bringing along extra.

Housing:
We are renting three houses in Presque Isle, not too far from the nordic center.  Most kids will be in a bed (some twins, some shared doubles), though there may be one or two on the floor.  Kids skiing in the races will have priority on the beds.  If you don’t like the idea of sharing a bed (or sharing sheets/blankets), bring a sleeping bag to use on the bed or floor.  Also, a couple boys and a couple girls should bring sleeping bags, in case they end up on the floor.

Skis:
Check the Wax Info tab on the blog for wax information.  Be sure you've waxed your race skis.

What to Bring:
Lunch/snack for Saturday
Snacks/bars for 4 days

A note about electronics ...
-       Cell phones/ipods may come on this trip
-       Laptops should remain at home
-       Chaperones will again be mindful of any cell phones or ipods getting too tired on this trip - it is their vacation too - and so will carefully wrap any over-used cell phones/ipods in a beautiful pink silk and lovingly set them aside for a rest period as necessary.

LABEL ALL THE GEAR AND CLOTHES YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE.

Cost:
As was mentioned in the ski team info letter sent out in November, families will be billed after the trip for the cost of the trip itself (house, food, etc.).  We hope to keep the cost under $250.

Other Info:
On Saturday, we will get pizza dinner upon arrival in Presque Isle.  Keep a snack handy for the van ride if you'll be hungry.  The drive will be about 4.5 hours.
