Ski Camp 2015 - Info and Packing List

SKI CAMP 2015 - Note from John, Camp Info and Packing List ...

The school has a new name and a new class of freshman who are bringing lots of energy to the Maine Coast Waldorf Nordic Team.  Our fall block of training has been an extended dryland session compared to the last few winters. This type of training has many benefits and keeps everyone hungry for the real thing - on SNOW.  The ski camp in Fort Kent should provide the skiing everyone has been looking forward to.  The trails in Fort Kent are world class and they have hosted World Cup Biathlon competitions, as well as regional XC events.  A portion of the trail system is lighted so we will have plenty of opportunity to ski into the afternoon.  A check of the forecast indicates that snow is likely Sunday and a cool down is expected next week.

That means everyone should be prepared to ski in COLD conditions.  The key in cold conditions is proper layers and to start each session warm.  Hand warmers or glove/mitt liners will help keep hands warm.  Also be sure to remember good hydration and nutrition habits.  Carry a water bottle and have a snack or energy bar available while training. You should wax your skis for cold conditions - 10-25F is what I expect.  You can start with a green or green&blue glide wax on your skate skis and the tips/tails of your classic skis.  We plan to ski upon arrival in Fort Kent on Monday afternoon so dress to ski.  We plan to have the van depart Desert Rd at 7:00 am on Monday morning.  Continue to check the blog for any updates.  Wishing all a happy holiday!

John

CAMP INFO ...

The adults on this trip will be John Tarling, Sarah Pierce, Gina Quinn-Skillings and Jim Skillings - huge thanks to this intrepid group! ...
Lodging:  Overlook Motel and Cabins, Eagle Lake (just south of Fort Kent)
Contact information:  We are not certain of cell service in the north country, but contact numbers are Overlook Motel 444-4535, Sarah 776-4959, John T. 807-1919.  Email and/or texts may work better than a phone call.
We will assess the cost per family after camp once all expenses are known.  Families will be billed at that time.  Costs will include food, lodging, trail passes and gas.

Pre-Camp:
All skiers should prepare their skis prior to camp.

Classic skis:
Clean kick zone
Sand kick zone lightly with a 100g sand paper or scotchbrite
Wax tips and tails with green or green&blue glide wax
Brush
Skate skis
Clean and wax with same green or green&blue glide wax
Brush
Having skis ready will save time.  We will add kick wax in Fort Kent before skiing.  Skiers should take responsibility for their skis, so everyone should bring a cold hard kick wax and glide wax along with scraper and cork.

Feeding the Nordic Team at Fort Kent!
We are looking forward to feeding hungry skiers next week and have figured out a menu that we hope will meet everyone's expectations.  If anyone wants to lend a hand by making some kind of cookie/bar/dessert items, that would be great.  (All treats should be NUT FREE!). There is also some food shopping that parents could help with, just let Sarah Pierce know if you can (danandsarah.pierce@gmail.com or 776-4959).  Thanks!

Travel details:
The group will be taking one school van and two private vehicles.  Everyone should be at Desert Rd at 6:50 am on Monday morning with a planned departure at 7:00 am.
